Kingdom City's old Highway 54 bridges are down and I-70 reopened a day early

The Kingdom City demolition wrapped up ahead of schedule

  1. Oct. 30Crews begin demolishing the old Highway 54 bridges at 7 p.m.
  2. Nov. 1Westbound I-70 fully reopens at about 10:45 a.m.
  3. Nov. 1Eastbound I-70 and Highway 54 reopen at about 1:30 p.m.
  4. Nov. 2 had scheduled the closure to end at 5 a.m.

If you drove through Kingdom City this weekend, the old Highway 54 bridges over I-70 are gone and the roads are open. Demolition started at 7 p.m. Friday, and had until 5 a.m. Monday. Westbound I-70 reopened around 10:45 a.m. Sunday, and eastbound I-70 and Highway 54 followed about 1:30 p.m.

program director Eric Kopinski told 93.9 The Eagle the longest delay was about 25 minutes, well under the hour MoDOT warned about. Crews will do more cleanup around the roundabout, but traffic stays open.

  • Work: third lanes on I-70 between mile markers 136 and 148
  • Crew: about 30 workers, day and night
  • Ramp from northbound U.S. 63 to westbound I-70: aimed for year's end

The demolition is part of Improve I-70, a $2.8 billion program that runs to 2030. In Columbia, the Providence Road ramps to I-70 and the Providence Road bridge over I-70 are closed for construction.
