- ➤ Columbia residents can celebrate ringing in 2026 with family-friendly balloon drops and lively late-night dance parties — events that offer plenty of local fun to welcome the new year. Columbia Missourian
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Eagle Bluffs Elementary is scheduled to open in fall 2026. The new two-story, 76,500 sqft school will serve up to 750 students + 150 staff. Columbia Missourian
- ➤ The Boone County Public Safety Childcare Center will finish construction in July 2026 on the Public Safety Campus, with officials planning a gradual opening starting with 15 to 20 children and expanding to serve up to 96 (10,000 sqft facility) as safety details are finalized. ABC 17
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Librarians at the university voted last week to unionize and seek exclusive bargaining for better wages and service improvements. The union filed its petition with the State Board of Mediation on Dec. 12 (as noted in the press release) and the university is reviewing the filing in accordance with law. ABC 17
- ➤ Jade Road on South Outer Road 70 near Kingdom City reopened Friday (Dec. 19) after a monthslong closure for culvert replacement work; construction continues on North Outer Road 70, which will remain closed through February subject to weather delays. KOMU 8
- ➤ The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bill to make the National Churchill Museum at Westminster College a National Historic Landmark. The companion measure moves to the House & if approved, the designation may boost tourism and economic growth in the region as the museum prepares for its 80th anniversary. KOMU 8
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Central Missouri Humane Society halted its intake of cats after detecting a contagious respiratory illness and is waiving adoption fees until Friday, Dec. 26. All cats at its shelter (Big Bear Boulevard) are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, prompting officials to encourage adoption or temporary fostering. ABC 17
- ➤ The Salvation Army's Harbor House in Columbia is expanding its support by adding recovery courses, health screenings, cooking classes, and job training (with a new campus opening next year) to better serve unhoused individuals working on sobriety. KRCG
