COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Harbor House will soon offer year-long recovery classes at its shelter to help residents overcome addiction and learn life skills like financial management. The new program launches in phases after the Opportunity Campus opens in the spring.  KOMU 8
  • Belly Market & Rotisserie will host a Cookies & Curio pop-up on Saturday, Dec. 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. featuring brunch, a cookie box build for $40, vintage curio browsing from $15 to $20, and a make-your-own Yule ball session with cash or Venmo payments.  Inside Columbia
  • Columbia community leaders announced that American Airlines will begin nonstop flights from Columbia Regional Airport to Charlotte Douglas International on June 4, 2026. The move comes amid record passenger growth and follows recent route additions from other carriers.  KOMU 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • On New Year's Eve, The Blue Note in Columbia will host a black-and-white event with doors opening at 8 p.m. and festivities at 9 p.m.; DJ Jonny Fuzion, a lyra performance by Jordan Mazur, a balloon drop, photo booth + champagne toast will mark the countdown to 2026.  Inside Columbia
  • The ballroom dance class at Come Dance With Us in southwest Columbia grew from 10 to over 100 students in less than a year, sparking local interest in dance. The teacher will offer additional sessions soon to meet rising demand.  Columbia Missourian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Thursday’s meeting, Columbia Public Schools approved spending $2.5M from an Ameren tax settlement to upgrade security cameras, update ADA-compliant bathrooms, install LED lighting, and improve electrical safety — all with reserve funds for possible cost overruns.  ABC 17
  • Columbia Public Schools broke ground on the new Eagle Bluffs Elementary at 5400 S. Sinclair Road. The $36 million, 76,500 sqft, two-story building is set to finish in fall 2026 with six color-coded learning pods & a gym that doubles as a storm shelter.  ABC 17

  • Columbia real estate owners are pulling 30 to 35 short-term rentals from the market as they struggle with compliance to new rules. A local company reported the closures amid efforts to meet updated requirements.  Columbia Missourian

  • Mizzou coach Eli Drinkwitz announced freshman quarterback Matt Zollers as the starting quarterback for the Gator Bowl today, while injured Beau Pribula is expected to enter the transfer portal in January.  KOMU 8
