COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday, November 22, over 50 organizations marched downtown in the Columbia Christmas Parade Against Poverty to mark the start of the holiday season.  Columbia Missourian
  • The Rotary Club of Columbia will host its sixth annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Fry this week to support local service projects. Turkeys will be available for pick up at Knights of Columbus (2525 N. Stadium Blvd.) from 8 a.m. until noon on Thursday, with each turkey serving about 10 to 12 people and donations benefiting local groups including the Boys and Girls Club, Salvation Army Harbor House and Columbia Fire Department.  KOMU 8

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire on Saturday night destroyed the home of former Mizzou basketball player Jason Sutherland’s family on North Pintail Lane—firefighters spent four hours fighting the blaze with no injuries—and local groups are accepting donations at First Midwest Bank at 1411 Grindstone Plaza.  KOMU 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 131st Bulldog Club of America National Bulldog Show kicked off Monday in Columbia and will run through Saturday afternoon. The event hosted by Heart of America Bulldog Club and Bulldog Club of greater St. Louis features a puppy obedience contest already held and a best of breed competition set for Wednesday — a key contest for entrants — as bulldogs arrive from North and South America and Asia.  KOMU 8
  • The National Bulldog Show begins in Columbia today — the event will feature different dog breeds and activities for local pet lovers, drawing families and community members.  Columbia Missourian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Frontier Schools has applied to open a charter school in Columbia that will offer classes from pre-K through fifth grade starting in fall 2026 or fall 2027; it currently runs a school in Kansas City and now awaits state approval. Job Point has not yet applied for its planned vocational high school in Boone County — adding another option to the ongoing discussion on education funding.  ABC 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Public Service Commission approved an agreement Monday that requires large energy users such as data centers to sign 12-year contracts, cover full costs, and post collateral so local customers do not face extra bills—Ameren Missouri and groups like the Sierra Club supported the plan. The deal also creates a Clean Energy Choice Rider and lowers the load threshold to help protect ratepayers and boost renewable energy.  ABC 17
  • On Oct. 1, Columbia Parks and Recreation raised 113 fees — a move to help cover higher wages and repair costs — and is set to bring in about $200,000 to $250,000. Some fees changed on Nov. 1, while ARC admission fees will rise on Dec. 15 and golf course fees will increase on March 1 — steps taken after recent pool renovations — to support local services.  KOMU 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rising drug prices are straining mid-Missouri healthcare budgets as Reece West of Invictus Health and Wealth said 95% of his clients face higher costs—tragedies like Cole Schmidtknecht’s death after losing coverage for his asthma medication fuel calls for reform. Lawmakers proposed Senate Bill 13 to limit pharmacy benefit managers, and experts stress that better consumer education is needed to keep these companies in check.  KRCG
  • SSM Health is negotiating with UnitedHealthcare as the current contract expires on Dec. 31+ if no deal is reached, patients with UnitedHealthcare coverage will lose in-network access to SSM Health’s facilities. SSM Health urged patients to contact UnitedHealthcare or speak with their HR departments with any concerns.  ABC 17

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Boonville’s Starr Pines Christmas Tree Farm has given families a chance to pick and cut a live tree since 1986—complete with hayrides and the natural aroma of fresh pines—as many in Mid-Missouri set up their trees early this holiday season. Local buyer Amy Salladay from Columbia chose a real tree to support local business and enjoy a traditional experience.  KRCG
