COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Central Missouri Humane Society is running a foster program—Barksgiving—to help every adoptable pet find a home for Thanksgiving, providing all necessary supplies with pick-up dates on Nov. 25 or 26. The shelter, which is low on space after taking in several animals from an impoundment case, needs local help to give its pets a break from the facility. KOMU 8
- ➤ Columbia’s Powerhouse Community Development Corporation is preparing free Thanksgiving meal boxes and turkeys today at the Parkade Center starting at 10:00 a.m.- they will also serve turkey dinners on Thanksgiving Day at Fifth Street Christian Church to support families hit by recent SNAP cuts while expecting over 2,400 turkeys and more than 2,000 meals. - ➤ The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri held its 24th annual food and fund drive outside grocery stores and saw more local volunteers help out this holiday season. Columbia Missourian
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Columbia Fire Department completed three days of technical rescue training on the Highway 63 southbound bridge over I-70 — a site closed for construction — where crews practiced aerial craning and rope rescue techniques. The teams also integrated rope systems, patient care and apparatus positioning to better prepare for crisis response. KRCG
- ➤ The Columbia Office of Violence Prevention has proposed a pilot program that will add trained community workers on Go COMO buses to help riders get needed services and improve safety. The program will be reviewed at the Dec. 1 City Council meeting and includes a $99,840 contract with Powerhouse Community Development Corporation — it is meant to reduce police presence on bus routes — to support smoother transit operations. - ➤ Columbia Pinball League wrapped up its fall season — its next season starts at 7 p.m. Monday at Hexagon Alley. Columbia Missourian
- ➤ The NCAA kept the ban on professional sports betting for college athletes and staff after Division I schools met the two-thirds vote threshold by Friday at 4 p.m., with Mizzou noting its support for SEC rules. Sports betting will go legal statewide on Dec. 1 — but the college betting ban remains — as the planned rule change was rescinded. KOMU 8
- ➤ Organizers expect heavy traffic as today's NCAA Cross Country Championship draws a large crowd—fans must purchase parking passes online since no passes will be sold on-site. Shuttle buses from three parking lots will begin at 6:30 a.m.—a plan to reduce congestion while police manage traffic. ABC 17
