COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officials with the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri said Friday that a government shutdown and the suspension of SNAP benefits made November more challenging, with a 17% jump in demand at the mobile market in Osage Hills and over 12,000 people served at the Columbia market in October. They are asking for more cash donations and volunteers—efforts that help the food bank distribute millions of pounds of food each year.  KRCG
  • Room at the Inn in Mexico will operate only as needed in December during severe winter weather because of a lack of funding, according to the Audrain County Shelter Resource Coalition. The emergency shelter will open when hard freezes occur (when temperatures drop between 24 and 27°F for at least two hours or when wind chill warnings are in effect) and trained volunteers are available.  KOMU 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Meet ShowMe Theatricals will perform Merry Ol’ Missouri: A Family Christmas Spectacular at the Missouri Theatre in Columbia Dec. 18 through Dec. 20. The 80-minute production—produced by local co-founders Melissa Bohon-Webel and Shelby Ringdahl Cox—features over 100 cast members and a unique '12 days of Christmas' showcasing local flavors.  KRCG
  • Maude Vintage celebrates its 25th anniversary in Columbia — owner Sabrina Garcia-Rubio said the shop connects locals with vintage clothes — and highlights its unique collection of carefully curated finds.  Columbia Missourian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Columbia Public Schools released its annual performance report on Nov. 6 showing rising scores since 2022— the school board will review the results at a meeting on Monday, Nov. 10, with Superintendent Jeff Klein highlighting schools that improved and met state targets.  Columbia Daily Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program is using leftover federal funds to help elderly and disabled households pay for utilities after its October opening — state officials said there was not a significant rise in applications. In Columbia, city aid nearly doubled from $188,100 last October to $362,100 this year and November payments tripled from $86,400 to $225,300 — officials expect crisis funds to last until September.  ABC 17
  • MoDOT crews completed laying new pavement in the I-70 work zone between mile markers 137 and 144 between Columbia and Kingdom City—two lanes are open in each direction and a permanent concrete barrier will be finished later this month.  KOMU 8
  • The FAA announced it will cut flights at 40 major airports including those serving Columbia Regional Airport starting Friday due to a government shutdown—reductions will begin at 4% and rise to a maximum of 10% over the week. Airlines such as United, American, Delta and Southwest will cancel flights and offer refunds or rebooking while COU officials await further details.  ABC 17

  • More than 1,700 Missouri high school and middle school students attended MU Health Care's Third Annual Tomorrow's Health Care Experts Expo on Friday in Columbia—students learned about jobs in 52 health care specialties and explored interactive booths featuring ambulances, X-rays and microscopes.  KRCG
