  • The Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri served 4,396 households in October and 339 on Wednesday as rising food and transportation costs, fewer donations, and an ongoing federal government shutdown that disrupted SNAP benefits increased community need. Local support from Columbia and Boone County—totaling $100,000 in contributions—has helped the Food Bank stretch supplies, with $1 now providing the equivalent of three meals.  KOMU 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bluestem Missouri Crafts in downtown Columbia has found a new owner after a monthslong search to continue its 42-year run of Missouri-made art. The new owners, a couple who have long shopped there, will officially take over at the start of next year — ensuring the store remains a local staple.  KOMU 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Plume is hosting its 12th annual Handmade Holiday Open House from today to Sunday during store hours—local vendors will show holiday goods while time slots cost $10 to curb crowds. The department is working with its EBT vendor to release payments promptly (USDA noted processing could take weeks to months).  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • Federal Judge John McConnell ordered that SNAP benefits be fully restored this month using extra USDA funds, though many recipients may wait a few days for help as vendors complete the process—this action comes after the longest government shutdown. Community volunteers at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church served free meals to more than 70 people and will continue offering meals each Thursday to families facing food insecurity.  ABC 17
  • Columbia Regional Airport has several flights to Dallas and Chicago that might be delayed today—FAA will reduce air travel by up to 10% at 40 airports amid a government shutdown that has left air traffic controllers unpaid.
