Good morning, Columbia. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 6th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • With SNAP benefits frozen from the government shutdown, West Main Pizza in Jefferson City offered free personal pizzas for children from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday through Wednesday — a response to local need. In Columbia, Clovers Natural Market is providing free meals and produce to SNAP cardholders and will hold a Purchase with a Purpose event on Nov.15 — efforts that support local food banks.  KOMU 8
  • First Chance for Children, a nonprofit for mid-Missouri families with young kids, said diaper and supply requests doubled in the first week of November as fewer SNAP benefits and missing paychecks left families struggling—its emergency response includes doubling diaper distribution to 50 per child and opening a hygiene and food pantry. The organization warned that without more donations it may soon be unable to meet these essential needs—immediate support is critical for children’s health and safety.  KOMU 8
  • Veterans United Home Loans will hold the final year of its free drive-through holiday light show—Bright Lights/Holiday Nights—from Dec. 10 to Dec. 21 at 550 Veterans United Drive; the event, which debuted in 2020 and drew over 80,000 visitors, is ending due to increased traffic and nearby new developments.  KOMU 8
