  • Central Bank of Boone County, Audrain County and Moberly will collect funds during November for the Food Bank's VIP for Veterans Program so veterans can receive monthly boxes with food and personal care items — donors giving more than $10 will get a black and gold Score Against Hunger ball cap at any bank branch.  KOMU 8
  • Coyote Hill will host a ribbon-cutting and open house for its new Family Center on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 4-6 p.m. at 310 N. Tenth St—CEO Bill Atherton will explain how the $2.6 million center will offer training, licensing, coaching, advocacy and adoption support for foster families.  KOMU 8

  • Two Jamaican business owners in Mid-Missouri shared their deep worry after Hurricane Melissa devastated Jamaica with 19 confirmed deaths and widespread damage—relief crews continue working to deliver supplies and restore power. Recent emotional reflections from the owners show the storm has brought back painful childhood memories of past hurricanes.  ABC 17

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local researchers and farmers including Tim Reinbott and Donnie Hubble revived old soil care methods by planting cover crops and using drones to help fields hold water during drought—about 600 farmers are supported by a $25 million grant to try these techniques.  KOMU 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • Columbia residents raised nearly $45,000 in a Saturday fundraiser walk at Cosmo-Bethel Park to support ALS research + about 100 walkers joined teams including Team Tiger which raised $1,000 + the event aimed to reach a $72,000 goal.  ABC 17
  • The Columbia Cosmopolitan Clubs held their second annual Diabetes Fair on Saturday, offering free A1C and blood pressure screenings and talks by local experts on managing diabetes. More than 25 vendors and health groups joined the event during International Diabetes Awareness Month to help people better control the condition.  KOMU 8
