Good morning, Columbia. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 1st of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officials from the City of Columbia and Boone County donated $100,000 to the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri using ARPA contracts to help during the federal government shutdown and the temporary SNAP benefits suspension. The funding is expected to support the bank as November brings higher food demand and rising heating costs.  KRCG
  • The Voluntary Action Center Holiday Program has been a Boone County tradition since 1983 that connects local sponsors with families in need and reached 1,033 families in 2024. In 2025, the program will run December 8–13 — sponsor drop-offs occur Monday through Wednesday, agency pick-up on Thursday, and families pick up on Friday and Saturday at Broadway Christian Church.  COMO Magazine

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hy-Vee announced that from Nov. 3 to Nov. 7 free kids meals will be served for children 12 and under at stores with hot food service from 4-7 p.m., while everyone else can buy the same meal for $3 as SNAP benefits expire amid the shutdown—starting Friday, the chain will also offer food bank donation bundles and share simple $3-or-less recipe tips on social media.  KOMU 8
  • Studio San opened earlier this year in the old Breeze Bridal & Prom storefront and is hosting a small-batch collection from six to seven Indian designers. CULTURE NEWS

  • Erica Martin and Aireen Arellano have released a children's book titled Pixelated Pearl that follows a young Filipino girl as she learns to embrace her nerdy—yet girly—persona while reflecting the authors’ own experiences with discrimination and identity. • Boone County Fire District will move firefighters and equipment into its new Station 8 on Route K next week in Columbia, featuring a decontamination zone and hotel-style rooms that increase resident capacity. The $5 million project came in under budget from a no-tax-increase bond issue and will host an open house (4-6 p.m. Nov. 18) for the public.  KOMU 8

  • The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance released final 2026 health insurance rates and said that rates will increase for individuals and small business markets as premium tax credits expire at the end of 2025.
