COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Nearly 400 Ameren Missouri customers lost power in the Sturgeon area Wednesday morning at about 8:30 a.m.—Ameren expected to restore power by around 11:30 a.m. as crews worked to determine the cause. ABC 17
- ➤ Columbia is seeing progress on the $18.6 million Opportunity Campus project that will bring 125 shelter beds, a resource center offering 150 meals daily, and various service spaces to support the unhoused (funded mainly by the American Rescue Plan Act and local donors). The campus will open its resource center in late March with the shelter following two to three months later, after five months of construction. KOMU 8
- ➤ Federal SNAP dollars will not be available after Nov. 1, so Boone County food pantries + local groups, including Meals on Wheels Columbia, are stepping in to offer free meals and mobile market options for residents in need. Columbia Daily Tribune
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Mike Kehoe announced on Wednesday that he transferred $10.6 million to Missouri Area Agencies on Aging for senior meals and $5 million to food banks while Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits were not issued for November due to a federal shutdown. State agencies said they will issue November SNAP benefits once the federal government reopens. KOMU 8
- ➤ MoDOT met on Wednesday in Columbia and warned that highway deaths may rise to 745 in 2025 — with over 100 potentially involving distracted driving — while law enforcement has already issued nearly 1,300 citations for the Hands-Free Law since January 1. KOMU 8
- ➤ The Columbia Police Department is dedicating extra officers for Trader Joe's grand opening today at 9 a.m. at 201 N. Stadium Blvd in the Shoppes at Stadium, with off-duty officers handling traffic control + ensuring a smooth start; the store will operate daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. ABC 17
- ➤ Missouri WIC benefits will remain available for redemption into November as DHSS monitors funding amid the ongoing federal shutdown+ retailers and program participants will be notified if benefit redemption pauses later this month. KOMU 8
- ➤ Columbia launched the Ride Home program in early October to help low-income residents get a one-way ride after traveling to the city. The program, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and managed by First/Last Mile Valet Service, provided its first ride so far—officials expect more referrals as outreach increases. KOMU 8
- ➤ Governor Mike Kehoe announced that the state is spending over $15 million to cover food programs amid the federal government shutdown — $10.6 million is directed to Missouri Area Agencies on Aging while $5 million supports state food banks.
