- ➤ Missouri Nightmare, a new haunted house in Columbia, will offer free tickets from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 for anyone who brings a Fear Fest receipt—a request linked to 25 unresolved refund complaints from its sudden 2024 closure. - ➤ An economic study estimates Missouri could earn up to $75 million a year from THC beverages if state regulators set safety rules amid concerns over unregulated sales and safety risks for minors. - ➤ The Columbia School District Policy Committee voted Monday to clarify its tobacco and vaping rules for employees, making it clear that a first violation could lead to strong discipline while leaving termination decisions to administrators—an update that is part of a review of 180 policies aimed at enhancing safety on district property. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Fourteen Missouri state parks, including those in Columbia, Camdenton and Macon, will close temporarily for managed deer hunts aimed at reducing high deer populations, with dates set for November and December. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has already selected hunters — visitors should check park status before planning visits. KOMU 8

- ➤ Local Motion, a local transportation advocacy group, said the proposed ordinance to keep pedestrians out of medians does not make roads safer because it only limits behavior rather than improving road conditions. The group urged city leaders to redesign corridors, lower speed limits, and add accessible crosswalks — while another nonprofit pushed for standard rules across all intersections. KOMU 8
- ➤ A section of Park Avenue between Seventh and Eighth streets will be closed from 7 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 (until 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20) for waterline work on the East Park Avenue Apartments. The north sidewalk, four parking meters, and all three Armory entrances will be closed (drivers should use East Ash Street for parking) until the project is complete. ABC 17
- ➤ Missouri Child Care Works will launch on Nov. 1 to help make child care more affordable by sharing costs among state funds, local employers, and families—Kids Win Missouri manages the program and said it will help middle-income parents return to work. - ➤ Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services is holding a walk-in flu shot clinic today at the First Christian Church Friendship Building at 120 N. Rollins St. in Centralia from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. — it is the first of two clinics. A second clinic will be held on Oct. 30 at the Columbia Public Library at 100 W. Broadway in Columbia — both clinics offer the updated flu vaccine to all residents and the COVID-19 vaccine, with a high-dose option for those 65 and older and out-of-pocket costs of $40 for the flu shot, $85 for the high-dose shot, or $125 for the COVID-19 vaccine. - ➤ Missouri emergency departments have averaged wait times of 2 hours 35 minutes (ranking the state 29th) as patient loads increased and many patients lacked access to primary care. Boone Health officials advise those with non-life-threatening conditions to use urgent or primary care centers to help ease ER delays. ABC 17
