- ➤ Lakeside Ashland is showing movies this season including E.T. the Extraterrestrial today at 6:30 p.m., Scream 1996 on Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m., Hocus Pocus on Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m., and Coco on Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10 per car when bought online or $15 at the gate+gates open at 5:30 p.m. with seating available on the lawn or in your car. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ University of Missouri is reviewing its academic calendar for fall 2026 and may cut the traditional Stop Day — a break for students — to meet mandated class hours after Veterans Day falls on a Wednesday; the MU Faculty Council will vote on the change Thursday and it must be approved by the chancellor, president, and Board of Curators. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Missouri Department of Conservation said waterfowl hunting at Eagle Bluffs is limited this fall due to a failed river pump — a key source of the area’s water — leaving hunters with roughly half the normal spots. New pumps will be installed by early 2026 and access to the Missouri River parking lot will be closed for safety. KOMU 8

- ➤ Columbia will begin resurfacing a 2,000-foot section of Rock Quarry Road south of East Stadium Boulevard on Oct. 27 at 7 a.m. with one lane open and traffic control in place; crews will work daily until the project finishes on Nov. 7, weather permitting. KOMU 8
- ➤ A judge blocked an attempted layoff of 80 employees at the Columbia Environmental Research Center—an establishment with 102 workers—after a federal lawsuit filed in California challenged the Department of Interior's plan to cut more than 2,300 jobs nationwide. The ruling stops the job cuts at the local center and ensures environmental research work continues. ABC 17
- ➤ Owen Ramsingh, a Columbia man holding a green card, is detained by ICE in El Paso and has an immigration hearing set for Nov. 6. - ➤ Boone County first responders completed an active shooter training session at the Food Bank headquarters on Vandiver Drive in Columbia last Thursday (the course used lectures and a tabletop scenario simulating an incident at Columbia Mall). Organized by the Boone County Office of Emergency Management and the Public Safety Advisory Committee, the training improved agency coordination and a follow-up session is scheduled for November at the Columbia Police Department Regional Training Center. - ➤ Black women in Missouri face a 40% higher breast cancer death rate than white women due to delays in diagnosis and limited access to care—survivors stress the importance of regular screenings. A local fundraiser for Missouri women with breast cancer will be held at Big Daddy's BBQ in Columbia on Sunday October 26 at 12 p.m. with $25 tickets to support local care programs. KRCG
- ➤ Boone Health announced Thursday morning that it is building a new Glasgow clinic to add two full-time providers, occupational medicine services, and X-ray technology for local and surrounding communities — the construction has already begun and will be completed by late summer or early fall 2026. - ➤ Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services is adding 39 new naloxone boxes in Boone County to help reverse opioid overdoses by giving 24-hour access to the life-saving medicine. The health office put up the first box on Tuesday at 1005 Worley St and will work with groups like the Reentry Opportunity Center—so people can get the medicine without asking—to expand the service. - ➤ Columbia nonprofit Central Missouri Community Action is building 14 affordable homes near Providence Road and Hickman Avenue using federal ARPA and local funds to help renters move toward home ownership.
