  • A brake light clinic in Columbia is offering drivers a chance to check their brake lights—an effort aimed at reducing traffic stops while also providing free clothing, food staples and household items donated by local volunteers.  Columbia Missourian

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Trader Joe's announced that its new Columbia store will open on the named date and time, giving local shoppers a new option for groceries. The chain will begin serving customers once the store opens.  Columbia Missourian

CULTURE NEWS

  • Twain is hosting a Halloween pop-up that serves themed cocktails such as The Other Mother Martini and The Black Fame Fizz along with sweet treats like chocolate-covered strawberries and red velvet cake balls until Oct. 31—its taproom at 23 S 8th Street is open Tuesday through Saturday.  Inside Columbia

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Department of Conservation said chronic wasting disease is threatening the deer population and new rules require hunters to submit extra deer for testing—if the disease is not managed, hunting seasons may be halted. The fatal disease was first found in 2010 and has spread to over 60 counties.  KRCG

FINANCE NEWS

  • A Boone County man won $3.2 million after buying a Lotto ticket at a local gas station and checking his ticket after watching a movie on October 15. He then picked up his prize at the Missouri Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City — he double and triple checked the numbers before safeguarding his winning ticket.  KRCG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Gaming Commission issued 39 temporary retail and mobile sports betting licenses to let companies test systems and equipment ahead of a Dec. 1 launch — the licenses allow firms to make necessary preparations before sports betting goes live.  ABC 17

HEALTH NEWS

  • Many Columbia residents turning on their heat for the first time in months notice a brief burning smell that is usually caused by dust burning off. If the smell lingers or smoke appears, residents should check and replace their filters, test their carbon monoxide alarms, and turn off their system immediately—calling 911 if flames are seen.  ABC 17
  • Researchers from MU's School of Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine and College of Agriculture received a $2.7 million NIH grant to study why obesity makes arteries stiff and leads to heart problems— they will test if lowering the enzyme TG2 can guide new treatments. This study aims to find answers that may help prevent heart disease caused by obesity.  KRCG

  • 44 Canteen has temporarily returned its Blackened Shrimp and Dirty Rice taco featuring blackened, seared shrimp, chorizo dirty rice, creole remoulade, lemon and parsley. The restaurant is open every day except Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. (closing at 9:30 p.m. on Fridays) at 21 N. 9th St and will be closed Oct. 27-30.  Inside Columbia
