- ➤ More than 650,000 Missouri residents will lose SNAP benefits for November due to the government shutdown, so local food banks are preparing for a surge in people needing help. The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri, which serves over 200,000 people each month with 145 partner agencies, said its resources may be stretched as extra demand comes—especially ahead of the holiday season. - ➤ Alexis Hurst, daughter of Roger Bone, a 56-year-old Jefferson City man killed when a dump truck struck his bicycle near the intersection of Business Loop 70 and Range Line Street on Monday, said she wants safety improvements—after an audit noted 11 crashes since January 1. ABC 17
- ➤ A house caught fire Monday evening on Zumwalt Road in Boone County and firefighters arrived at 7:25 p.m. to control heavy flames—no injuries were reported. ABC 17
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Columbia's Office of Violence Prevention is exploring a new school-based mentorship and workforce development program for at-risk youth modeled after a successful South Carolina initiative—schools would nominate students to participate in internships and job-shadowing opportunities that offer academic and career guidance. Officials say the program will help steer young people away from violence by providing an alternative pathway to college and career readiness. ABC 17
- ➤ Stephens College has announced Jonathan Sadhoo as its new vice president for finance and administration and chief financial officer, effective January 1—Tom Richards will serve until year's end. Sadhoo, who previously worked at Independence Community College, said he plans to build local partnerships that support student success. KOMU 8

- ➤ The City of Columbia and Boone County Public Health and Human Services have begun walk-in flu and COVID-19 vaccine clinics at Hallsville Community Center with additional sessions planned in Centralia on Oct 28, Columbia on Oct 30 and at South Providence Medical Park on Oct 25 — the clinics provide vaccines to residents with or without insurance. - ➤ Burrell Behavioral Health broke ground Tuesday on a new Behavioral Health Crisis Center on Texas Avenue in Columbia that will triple treatment time from 23 to 72 hours and be three times larger than its current East Walnut location. The project—funded with $3 million from American Rescue Plan Act funds—is expected to take about a year and will expand access including services for the Boone County Jail while the older center remains open 24/7. - ➤ Columbia will hold its first community mental health session Saturday at Hanover Village Community Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—the training is one of six trauma-informed sessions funded by a $21,000 contract with TMT Consulting. ABC 17
