Good morning, Columbia. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 20th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Willie's and Fieldhouse bar in downtown Columbia held safety training sessions on Sunday and today with the SAFE Bar Network to help staff learn how to handle uncomfortable situations. The bar renewed its membership with the nonprofit and will soon display coasters and signage to show that its team is prepared.  KOMU 8
  • Sacred Heart Catholic Church hosted a book sale this past weekend that featured over 1,000 books donated by longtime parishioner John Eakin, including many cookbooks he left to share his passion. Volunteers spent 80 hours sorting the collection—proceeds will go to replace the church’s aging HVAC system.  KOMU 8
  • Community members participated in the 11th annual Out of the Darkness Walk — raising funds and support for suicide prevention efforts while helping local mental health programs.  Columbia Missourian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Driving with a car's interior lights on is not illegal in Missouri, but experts warn that the extra brightness can reduce driver visibility—making it easier for an officer to notice distracted driving. The glare may contribute to unsafe road conditions, so drivers are advised to keep their focus on the road at all times.  Columbia Daily Tribune
