COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Love Columbia received a generous donation from 98-year-old Charlie, who decided to stop driving—he donated his van and unused hearing aids to support those in need. The nonprofit said the gifts will help provide essential services for struggling residents in Columbia.  KRCG

CRIME NEWS

  • Columbia businessman Gregory A. DeLine is accused of faking over 450 employees (as alleged in a federal lawsuit) to receive between $5 million and $10 million in PPP loans from Regional Bank and Providence Bank in April 2020.  KOMU 8

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Columbia Regional Airport recorded 11,306 departing passengers in September—the highest monthly total since December 2019—and added United Airlines flights on September 25 to boost growth; officials expect more than 22,000 passengers in October while TSA and airport operations remain unaffected by the federal shutdown.  KRCG
  • The Columbia Chamber of Commerce announced the Boomerang program (to fill job openings) as it aims to bring back past residents (to ease the city's worker shortage).  Columbia Missourian

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Missouri Conservation Corps will host a tree-planting event at Gans Creek Recreation Area next Thursday, October 30, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.—a partnership with COMO Trail Association, Volunteer Columbia, and Columbia Parks and Recreation that invites volunteers of all ages to help reach a goal of planting 500 trees this fall.  KRCG
  • Rock Bridge Memorial State Park and Gans Creek Wild Area in Columbia will be closed on November 3 and November 4 for managed deer hunts to help control the deer population. Visitors are urged not to visit during these days (the parks close temporarily) and to plan alternative activities (this measure protects the ecosystem).  KRCG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MoDOT and law enforcement urged I-70 drivers to slow down in work zones after 39 crashes with 82 vehicles occurred from January 1 to September 30. Twelve projects in Boone and Callaway counties will cause delays through late 2027—crews report near misses and overturned semitrucks in some areas.  ABC 17
  • The Columbia Fire Department is using a new $44,000 AI system called Darkhorse Emergency—an application that maps high-risk areas for fire and EMS incidents to help guide staffing and station placement. Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer, who brought the idea with him from Spokane when he was hired in August, said the tool makes every dollar count for risk management.  KOMU 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • Data from the University of Missouri–St. Louis Addiction Science Team show that overdose deaths in Missouri fell 25.6% in 2024, dropping from 1,948 in 2023 to 1,450—with Central Missouri recording a 37% decline. Local health officials credited the drop to increased caution and improved treatment access, and the health department will host a Save a Life training at the Columbia Public Library from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 23.  ABC 17

  • COR Development began site work last week on a 14-acre project at a busy south Columbia intersection—new apartments and commercial buildings will be built to serve local demand.  Columbia Missourian
