COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lutheran Family and Children's Services marks 30 years in mid-Missouri providing adoption, parenting education and pregnancy counseling—continuing its mission to support local families.  Columbia Missourian
  • The City of Columbia finished its first year of the Love Your Block program by giving nearly $22,000 in mini-grants to 11 Central Columbia neighborhoods. The Noble Court Neighborhood Watch Group put up a new sign on August 23 to honor their historic Black subdivision—more grants will be awarded in 2026.  KRCG
  • The ongoing homelessness crisis is shown by local resident Sammantha McVicar, who was unhoused from late April to late August and is now 74 days clean while working as a fast-food manager. Community support, including a free haircut from Broadway Hair Company, helped her secure temporary housing—her story has sparked conversation among local residents.  KRCG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Missouri’s DESE and Gold Star Foods launched the Apple Crunch Off program on October 1 to bring fresh, Missouri-grown apples to 300 school districts as part of National Farm to School Month. Schools will receive five free cases from Peters Orchards and Schweizer Orchards and digital toolkits on farming and apple nutrition—tools that show students where healthy food comes from.  KOMU 8
  • Columbia College temporarily launched its tuition assistance program 'You Stand For Us, We Stand By You' to cover military students who lost federal tuition support during the shutdown—active-duty service members, reservists and national guard members can continue their fall studies without extra costs. Provost Dr. Sandy Hamar said the college has secured funds for the fall but funding for winter remains uncertain—students face ongoing financial stress as federal aid remains frozen.  KRCG
  • Columbia Public Schools is deciding how to spend a one-time $9 million payment from Boone County after a property-tax settlement with Ameren Missouri. District leaders shared early plans—such as facility improvements, safety upgrades, and instructional support—at a finance committee meeting on Oct 7 and will make final decisions next spring.  ABC 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday afternoon, the City of Columbia and CBB Transportation Solutions conducted a walk-through audit along the Business Loop 70 corridor between the Creasy Springs Road roundabout and Stadium Boulevard. The audit identified needed changes — including crosswalk additions, signal timing adjustments during sporting events, and sidewalk repairs—to help reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries.  ABC 17

HEALTH NEWS

  • Burrell Behavioral Health is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Behavioral Health Crisis Center at 107 Texas Ave on Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. The new center, funded by city APRA funds, will be three times larger and offer up to 72 hours of care while the current facility remains open 24 hours a day.  Inside Columbia
  • Boone Health launches a rapid care program today to shorten emergency room wait times—this effort addresses rising patient demand and current capacity issues.  Columbia Missourian
  • MU Health Care is urging Columbia patients to update their flu and COVID-19 shots this October to protect against severe illness; it will host vaccination clinics on Oct. 16th, Oct. 18th, Oct. 20th, Oct. 21st, Oct. 23rd, Oct. 25th, and Oct. 30th at regional locations—high-risk individuals, including older adults and eligible children, are encouraged to attend.  ABC 17
  • Tiny Play Café will host a free Motherhood Mental Health Event in Columbia this week with Better Together Mental Health. On Thursday at 901 E Nifong Boulevard, suite B—kids play from 8-10 a.m. while mothers join a roundtable led by therapist Beth Orns from 9-10 a.m.  Inside Columbia
