ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A kitchen fire in an apartment on the 800 block of 7th Street in Boonville displaced one person—firefighters arrived at 1:18 p.m. on Sunday, quickly put out the flames, and the cause remains under investigation.  ABC 17

CULTURE NEWS

  • Anti-apartheid leader Albie Sachs will speak in Columbia about American democracy at the Kinder Institute's Global 250 Lecture Series—he will deliver his lecture titled 'The U.S. at 250 from South Africa' soon.  Columbia Missourian
  • Members of Columbia's Jewish community celebrated the safe return of 20 Israeli hostages and prayed for peace today at an event led by Rabbi Avraham Lapine at Chabad at Mizzou—marking a hopeful end to two years of conflict in the Middle East. This celebration comes as a significant moment for those who suffered loss during the recent war.  KRCG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Columbia College announced a new program Monday to cover tuition for military students affected by the government shutdown. The college will support active-duty, reservist, and National Guard students so they can continue their education through Fall 2025.  KRCG
  • Columbia Public Schools officials met Monday to discuss expanding weapon detection systems to extracurricular activities. The district said the systems—first used at Rock Bridge, Hickman and Battle High—helped keep prohibited items out of school events and will be used at upcoming school dances.  KOMU 8
  • Columbia Public Schools clarified that snow days will remain free from alternative instruction for the current and upcoming school year, though voluntary learning materials will be available if school is canceled due to weather—this change comes after state legislative adjustments confirmed the calendar already meets required instructional days and hours. The district will also start refinancing the 2016 bonds in March to reduce its debt.  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • In August, Missouri’s MOScholars program awarded 2,329 scholarships—98% of which went to religious schools—after state funding doubled the available awards for the 2024-25 school year. Lawmakers and critics questioned using public dollars for private institutions, noting just 59 awards went to nonreligious schools.  Columbia Daily Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a Monday night meeting, the Columbia Board of Education advocated a change to state law to cap superintendent payouts at one year’s salary—an effort sparked by a costly $667,000 separation payout for former Superintendent Brian Yearwood. The board will discuss the proposal further at the MSBA meeting next week—aiming to protect taxpayers from undue fiscal risk.  ABC 17
  • A group of about 10 people is marching from Columbia to Jefferson City over two days to protest the execution of Lance Shockley scheduled for today—protestors plan a quiet vigil outside Gov. Mike Kehoe's office after starting their walk Monday from the Boone County Courthouse and stopping in Ashland overnight to complete the 31-mile route. This march comes in response to the governor's clemency denial for Shockley, who maintained his innocence during his trial.  KOMU 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • Burrell Behavioral Health will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at 10 a.m. Oct. 21 for a new crisis center at 107 Texas Ave — near the Phoenix Clinic in Columbia. The center, which will be three times larger than the current facility at 1805 E. Walnut St. — will offer up to 72 hours of care while the existing center continues its full-day operations.  KOMU 8
