COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Columbia Board of Realtors donated $14,678.93 from its annual Charity Golf Tournament to Heart of Missouri CASA and The Day Dreams Foundation on October 8—each nonprofit received $7,339.46 to support programs for children facing financial barriers. Officials presented the checks at The Day Dreams Foundation’s new facility where plans to expand outreach were discussed.  KRCG
  • Demolition began on Oct. 7 at Cooper's Landing Riversite Resort and Marina in Columbia—clearing the site for new facilities designed to improve accessibility, guest amenities, road access and flood resistance along the Missouri River.  KRCG

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cooper's Landing began demolishing its old main building Monday to clear the way for a new facility with updated bathrooms, showers, and a laundry for campers. The new building, set to open by April 1, will include preserved pieces from the old structure—honoring its history.  KOMU 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • This October, Cafe Berlin hosts Berlin Nights—an event featuring live music from local talent such as Austin Hook Band, Backwater, and A-Frame Jazz Jam—and offers free trivia, open mic night, and select cafe dishes to create an energetic evening atmosphere. Attendees can enjoy dancing and creative expression during the transformed after-brunch hours.  Inside Columbia
  • COMO Flavors will return to Lakeside Ashland on Oct 18 with live music, local food, and retail vendors—attendees can opt for free entry or a $35 ticket book for quicker food sampling. More than a dozen restaurants will join the event and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Dream Tree Academy 573.  Inside Columbia

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Beacon Connect Transportation Family app shows the real-time location of school buses—helping families plan morning travel more easily.  Columbia Missourian
  • LiUNA Local 955 members plan a rally outside Jesse Hall on the MU campus today at 5 p.m. They will speak out against UM System President Mun Choi's email that limits free speech for workers.  KOMU 8
  • On October 8, a guest speaker from MU Health Care read 'Evidence! How Dr. John Snow Solved the Mystery of Cholera' to first grade students at Alpha Hart Lewis Elementary as part of United Way’s Reading Across Columbia event where books were given away to encourage early reading. The program will distribute over 2,500 books to local schools this year.  KRCG
  • MU Health Care and Heart of Missouri United Way teamed up on Wednesday to give over 2,500 books to 650 first and second graders at Alpha Hart Lewis Elementary School—marking the fourth annual Read Across Columbia event. Daniel Boone Regional Library also provided each child with a coupon for a free book to boost their love of reading.  KOMU 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Columbia city leaders approved a policy resolution to change Missouri’s juvenile gun laws—this decision will push lawmakers to match state rules with federal ones that allow minors to carry guns only for hunting or farming. Mayor Barbara Buffaloe and Police Chief Jill Schlude said the new priority is meant to help police and make downtown safer.  KRCG
  • Columbia Mayor Barbara Buffaloe changed her plan to form a task force for downtown violence and is now reaching out to city, county and university leaders—she is considering setting up a collegiate council to include student input. The change comes after a shooting that killed a Stephens College student and resulted in charges against a suspect.  KRCG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Schnucks is recalling its Smoked Mozzarella Penne Salad sold on or after Aug. 29—due to potential Listeria contamination that may pose risks for vulnerable customers. Missouri shoppers are urged to discard or return the product—for a full refund at their local store.  KOMU 8
  • The second in2Action recovery house will open in Columbia to fight the opioid crisis & support women in early recovery.  Columbia Missourian
  • The Larry Gross Lewy Body Awareness Foundation was started by sisters Amy and Rebecca to help families learn about Lewy Body Dementia and get clear resources after their father's misdiagnosis—over 1,500 care items have been shared so far. The nonprofit will join Tigers on the Prowl fundraising event on October 17—this step honors Larry's memory while teaching more people about the disease.  COMO Magazine
