GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Columbia Solid Waste Utility administrators held an open house Tuesday at the ARC to gather public input on plans to build a new automated material recycling facility at the landfill—officials plan to use the feedback to design a project that may take up to three years and cost millions after an EF-1 tornado damaged the old site on April 20. - ➤ Columbia City Council advanced a plan to renovate the Albert-Oakland Family Aquatic Center—upgrading plumbing, the pool shell, and adding 10 new shaded areas, an expanded kiddie pool, and updated teen features like a renovated slide, diving boards and a climbing wall. The $4 million renovations will be finished by the summer season in 2027 as the 50-year-old center and its pipes receive needed updates. KOMU 8
- ➤ Starting next week, MoDOT will close a short segment of Old U.S. 40 in Kingdom City for 30 days to remove a railroad bridge. Drivers will see advance warning signs that advise them to use an alternate route — part of the Improve I-70 program. KOMU 8
- ➤ The city of Columbia launched a new traffic safety program called CoMo to Zero that asks residents to complete a survey + mark unsafe spots on an interactive map to help reduce traffic deaths and injuries. KOMU 8
- ➤ Columbia Mayor Barbara Buffaloe will appear on ABC 17 News at 6 today to discuss the city's response to crime after a fatal downtown shooting. She said the city will continue working with existing groups (including law enforcement and property owners) instead of forming a new task force. ABC 17
- ➤ The Ride Home program began taking referrals on Monday to help displaced and homeless residents return to their communities. Local officials said the service will offer rides home and work to connect people with needed transit support. Columbia Missourian
