COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Family and friends in Columbia rallied to support Owen Ramsingh, a local man detained by ICE in Chicago on September 23 after his return from the Netherlands; he is now held at (Camp East Montana) in El Paso due to decades-old drug convictions. His community has started a Facebook page and is urging help through letters and calls to elected officials.  KRCG
  • Mid-Missouri PrideFest returned to Columbia over the weekend for its 25th annual celebration—featuring a parade through downtown that brought the community together.  Columbia Missourian
  • Protesters gathered Monday outside the Daniel Boone City Building after a weekend shooting and a letter from UM System President Mun Choi urging city leaders to address homeless encampments. Some argued that extra police would not fix homelessness while others asked for more social programs — the community remains divided.  KOMU 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cooper's Landing is renovating its general store to add a new upper level with indoor seating—this includes new restrooms and showers for campers. Preparations to tear down the old building began Monday and renovations will continue through early spring while visitors can still camp on site.  ABC 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Columbia Fire Department started Fire Prevention Week to raise fire safety awareness focused on proper lithium-ion battery charging after a rise in incidents. Local groups such as Safe Kids, Columbia Police Department, and Columbia Utilities joined the event—sharing tips to help residents protect their homes.  KRCG
  • Today, the City of Columbia is reviewing its stormwater management plan after the Department of Natural Resources set a November 15 deadline for a new draft ordinance to curb waste from homeless encampments. City officials plan to add clear rules for protecting streams – they will seek public feedback before finalizing the changes.  ABC 17
  • Missouri has asked for a federal waiver that would ban soft drinks, candy and desserts from SNAP purchases while also expanding Double Up Food Bucks to help families buy fresh local food—critics say the change could confuse shoppers and add stigma, though officials say it supports the governor’s push for healthier eating and will take effect in October 2026.  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • City Council approved construction of a new sidewalk on Broadway and planned renovations to the Albert-Oakland Family Aquatic Center to boost safety and improve local infrastructure—projects will move forward in the coming weeks.  Columbia Missourian
  • Columbia Solid Waste Utility is hosting an open house today at the ARC on W. Ash St. from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to discuss plans for a new Material Recycling Facility and a temporary facility built after an EF—1 tornado destroyed the previous building in April — visitors can ask questions and share comments as city leaders review a deal with Federal Recycling that gives the city 50% of the net value of processed material.  ABC 17
  • Mayor Barbara Buffaloe will speak at Columbia’s Let’s Talk Local discussion on Oct. 15 at Missouri United Methodist Church from 5:30–7 p.m.—city staff will review highlights from the new Fiscal Year 2026 budget that took effect on Oct. 1 and answer community questions. Attendees must park at the Tenth and Cherry Parking Garage and register online.  KOMU 8
  • City leaders met Monday night at a pre-council meeting at 5 p.m. and at the council meeting at 7 p.m. to review the city's strategic plan and an update from the Office of Violence Prevention—also discussing 2026 legislative priorities on minor handgun law changes, a recycling agreement that gives the city 50% of net revenue, pool renovations at the Albert-Oakland Family Aquatic Center, and a $616,000 sidewalk project on Broadway between Maplewood Drive and West Boulevard.  ABC 17
  • Columbia’s Office of Violence Prevention presented its new plan to reduce violence and strengthen neighborhoods at Monday’s City Council meeting in the Daniel Boone City Building — the plan focused on prevention, long-term community enrichment and partnerships with the police and schools. The strategy, called the Trauma-Informed — Community-Oriented System of Care, updated local officials on past achievements and next steps for safer neighborhoods.  KOMU 8
  • Columbia is following its existing process to remove new encampments after the Department of Natural Resources set a Nov. 15 deadline for Columbia, Boone County and the University of Missouri to submit a detailed water quality plan for Hinkson Creek, Grindstone Creek and Hominy Branch—areas showing E. coli contamination. City officials said current methods work and they will document practices while monitoring for further impacts.  KOMU 8

  • Missouri Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide will face off at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Faurot Field with the latest AP Top 25 Poll listing Alabama as No.8 and Missouri as No.14. The Crimson Tide beat Missouri 34 to 0 in their last meeting in 2024—adding to the teams' rivalry history.  KRCG
