COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local foundations including Veterans United, ROC Solid Foundation, Lizzy's Walk of Faith Foundation, and the Super Sam Foundation surprised 10 Columbia families with playground sets for children battling pediatric cancer at Veterans United Headquarters on Wednesday morning—these sets will be delivered tomorrow.  KRCG
  • On October 1, the Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri hosted a partner agency conference at The Crossing in Columbia where agencies held a workshop, planned strategies, and honored award winners—Elks Lodge Mobile, Lamb House, Palmyra Area Food Pantry, and Putnam County Senior Center. The event also detailed volunteer needs and local support programs for residents facing food insecurity.  KRCG

CRIME NEWS

  • Stephens College announced that 21-year-old nursing student Aiyanna Williams, who was fatally shot on Saturday, will have her funeral on October 10 at 10 a.m. at The Crossing Church—3615 Southland Drive in Columbia with her burial at Columbia Cemetery as the Williams family invites all touched by her life to attend.  KRCG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MU School of Medicine held a mass casualty simulation at Faurot Field on Wednesday to train emergency medicine residents in six scenarios including cardiac arrest, a stampede and spinal injuries. They used actors, mannequins and a mobile lab — a setup that mimicked real emergencies during football games.  ABC 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • University of Missouri System President Mun Choi invited Columbia officials to join a downtown walkthrough Saturday night from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m.—the tour will address safety concerns including gun violence and harassment after a shooting injured a MU student and led to a 23-year-old Florida man's arrest on a murder charge.  ABC 17
  • Missouri Medicaid director Todd Richardson will step down at the end of October after serving seven years. The Missouri Department of Social Services said Jessica Bax will work with the governor’s office to select an interim director by mid-October—ensuring Medicaid services continue without interruption.  KOMU 8
  • City officials announced that the Ride Home Program will start Monday, Oct. 6 to provide free, one-way rides for people trying to return to their home communities after using local services. Partners like First Last Mile and local agencies will verify eligibility based on income and referrals—this effort aims to reduce the local unhoused population.  KRCG
  • Feeding Missouri said that SNAP funding lasts until November but if Congress does not renew the 2018 Farm Bill, EBT card reloads could be delayed after Nov. 1—families may face food shortages. A government shutdown is expected to delay paychecks for essential workers, which could lead to increased demand at local food banks.  ABC 17

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In June, Boone County’s median home price rose over nine percent compared to last year as Columbia homes reached a typical price of $355,000—about $67,500 above the state median. Board of Realtors President Elect Alice Leeper said lower inventory on homes under $350,000 tightened the market and caused month-to-month changes.  KOMU 8
