COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Community members at Douglass Park shared concerns at a Monday meeting held by Columbia Parks and Recreation about plans to change the basketball courts. They questioned renaming the court for a Mizzou coach instead of a local hero and said project revisions will move forward with more feedback, with renovations finishing by 2026—officials invite further input online. - ➤ Twenty-five recruits from the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s 124th Class volunteered on the first weekend of September to help River City Habitat for Humanity by installing siding, organizing the recycling area, and hanging netting to keep birds out—improving the construction site. - ➤ Columbia has teamed with First/Last Mile Valet Service to start a Ride Home Program on Oct. 6—meant to give rides home to people with incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty limit. - ➤ Stephen's College held a memorial on Sunday evening for Aiyanna Williams, a student killed in a downtown shooting last weekend (the first student shooting death in over 40 years) as family and community members honored her legacy and called for action against gun violence. KRCG
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Missouri Department of Conservation advised residents to secure trash, pet food, and bird feeders as over 1,000 black bears search for food before winter—Vienna police have received reports of suspected bear activity. The department warned that feeding bears may lead to conflicts that force authorities to remove them. KRCG
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Missouri Department of Transportation waived fees for special over width hauling permits to help farmers and ranchers move hay today in response to Gov. Kehoe’s drought alert—hay haulers must request permits online and include a comment to get the fee waiver until December 1. KRCG
- ➤ Missouri filed a request with the USDA on Monday to limit the use of SNAP benefits for candy, desserts, soda, and similar items. Gov. Mike Kehoe said the change will help families buy healthier foods (by October 2026) and support the state’s farms. KOMU 8
- ➤ Columbia resident Owen Ramsingh, who works as a security and property manager, was detained by ICE at O’Hare after a yearly trip to Europe and described crowded detention conditions in Illinois—he is set to face a court hearing on Oct. 15. His family is now seeking legal help and asking for community letters of support—efforts aimed at countering a self-deport offer and securing his return home. ABC 17
