CRIME NEWS

  • Choi called on city and county officials to improve downtown safety after a fatal shooting—he warned that without changes, the state may step in.  Columbia Missourian
  • Stephens College student Aiyanna Williams died after she was shot early Saturday morning in downtown Columbia—she was one of three hit by gunfire and was kept on life support for organ donation.  KRCG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The 2026-27 FAFSA application opened on September 24 — a week earlier than planned — as announced by the U.S. Department of Education. The Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development urged students to file by Feb. 2 to get the most aid and Access Missouri funds.  KOMU 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials said the southeast North Eighth Street sidewalk on Columbia College campus is closed today until October 3 for demolition and water line work, and Hitt Street between Cherry and Locust is closed September 30 until October 3 to fix ADA sidewalk ramps—drivers can still access the Tenth and Cherry Parking Garage from the south.  KOMU 8

  • Mizzou fans began the 114th Homecoming celebrations nearly a week early with the 'Call of the Columns' tradition to show school spirit. The festivities build up to the football game as students and alumni gather in support of the team.  Columbia Missourian
