COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Drivers in downtown Columbia will face road closures Saturday morning as the University of Missouri homecoming parade begins at 9 a.m. at Tiger Avenue and Rollins Street, and transit services including Go COMO, Paratransit and the MU Tiger Line will be delayed until noon — with 131 groups expected to participate. - ➤ Pastor Andrew McCausland said Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church—known for serving the unhoused—will close in June as Turning Point moves to a new facility at Opportunity Campus, marking the end of over a century of ministry. Local churches have shown interest in taking over the historic building, ensuring its community role continues after the scheduled closure. ABC 17
- ➤ First Chance for Children (a local nonprofit) plans to help families struggling with diaper costs by offering state tax credits for diaper donations. The tax incentive (designed to ease diaper need) is expected to reduce costs for families in Columbia. Columbia Missourian
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Mizzou Students for Justice in Palestine posted on social media that they will march in the University of Missouri Homecoming Parade today after a Sept. 19 court ruling forced MU to allow them despite earlier safety concerns, and the group must follow parade guidelines—similar to rules set for nine other groups. - ➤ Elizabeth Herrera, a U.S. Air Force veteran and executive director of Mission Promise Kept at Stephens College, was honored Thursday in Washington, D.C. as a 2025 Woman Veteran Trailblazer by the Department of Veterans Affairs Center for Women Veterans (Women Veterans Forging a Path initiative) and was one of 28 honorees nationally recognized for her work in offering on-campus housing and support for female veterans (including child care and wraparound services). - ➤ Ten years after the 2015 protests, Mizzou students still face racial tensions — the university is under scrutiny for its past responses to discrimination and student expression. Ongoing concerns highlight the continuing challenges on campus. Columbia Missourian
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ East Phyllis Avenue in Columbia will be closed starting Monday, Sept. 29 for a stormwater system replacement — repairs will be completed by Oct. 10. Barricades and signs will direct traffic around the closure. KOMU 8
- ➤ The Columbia Housing Authority began demolition of Park Avenue housing units today as part of a reconstruction project (this work will continue in the coming months). Columbia Missourian
- ➤ Authorities have increased patrols during Mizzou homecoming festivities as extra officers from the University of Missouri Police — Columbia Police — Boone County Sheriff’s Department — Missouri State Highway Patrol are assigned to downtown and campus areas. - ➤ Tonight, clear and quiet conditions are expected in Columbia with temperatures falling to the mid 50s and winds from the southwest reaching 3 to 6 mph. Tomorrow, plenty of sunshine will support the Mizzou Homecoming parade and football game as temperatures rise into the mid 80s—dry weather is forecast to continue into next week. ABC 17
