COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The crew of the USS Jefferson City visited their namesake city to meet local leaders, present to an Army ROTC class at Lincoln University, and meet with Governor Mike Kehoe while touring local high schools, the University of Missouri Research Reactor, and the Missouri Supreme Court. They will also attend the Mizzou homecoming game before departing for Guam on Sunday.  KRCG
  • Englewood held its annual mutton supper—featuring an auction to support the family of Tyler Barnes who died of cancer at the end of June.  Columbia Missourian

BUSINESS NEWS

  • United Airlines returns to Columbia Regional Airport today with two daily Chicago flights, starting with a departure just before 3 p.m., and will begin a daily Denver flight on Friday at 9 a.m. A ceremony is set for 1:30 p.m. today as local leaders mark the service restoration funded by a 1 million-dollar federal grant.  KOMU 8
  • Blossom Bakery, known for its handmade treats, will showcase its crisp rosettes (a fried cookie dusted with powdered sugar) at Tin Roof Monogram and Gift this Friday (noon to 6 p.m.) as it offers autumn-themed shapes for homecoming and seasonal events.  Inside Columbia

CULTURE NEWS

  • The free music festival Biscuits, Beats and Brews celebrates local music and biscuits and will begin next Friday, Oct. 3 at 5 p.m., with events running until 9 p.m. that day, noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday—local vendors will serve offerings such as Ozark Mountain Biscuit Co.'s biscuits, authentic Cajun fare and New York-style pizzas.  Inside Columbia
  • Freeair Books and Serendipity Salon and Gallery are hosting Read Between the Wines on September 30 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. — attendees will sample between five and six wine options, book excerpts, a charcuterie board, and non-alcoholic mocktails while proceeds benefit Dreams Preferred Scholarship and tickets cost $44.52.  Inside Columbia

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Columbia's Turning Point Chapter held its first meeting at Memorial Union on Wednesday; members began by honoring political activist Charlie Kirk with a moment of silence and will dedicate future meetings to his legacy while discussing plans for student involvement.  KOMU 8
  • Mizzou is asking private companies to share ideas for redeveloping underused campus land to add more attractions and improve the game day experience. The university will consider options like long-term leases + public-private partnerships and may start decisions in early 2026.  KOMU 8
  • The Missouri Students Association passed a resolution supporting the Legion of Black Collegians after the University of Missouri canceled the Black 2 Class Block Party because its name raised concerns of exclusion. University leaders said they would meet with the group – while the LBC demands include a campus-wide message, a town hall, and a public condemnation of racial harassment.  ABC 17

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Governor Mike Kehoe signed an executive order Tuesday declaring a drought alert until December 1+85 counties and 5 million residents are affected while experts reported that August was the third driest month on record and warn that crop yields may drop.  KRCG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missouri Department of Transportation announced that a temporary single-lane closure of eastbound I-70 will begin 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3 and continue until 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6 between Range Line Street and Highway 63 to allow construction of new eastbound lanes near Boone County Route B—Paris Road under weather-permitting conditions. The closure will affect traffic in Columbia next weekend.  ABC 17

  • Hundreds gathered to remember Ben Arnet (43), a beloved sports director who died last month, during a celebration of life that honored him as a sports broadcaster, father, husband and friend.  Columbia Missourian
