  • Impact Support Services celebrates 50 years of providing support for individuals with developmental disabilities—its milestone marks decades of community care and ongoing service.  Columbia Missourian
  • Mizzou Athletics and the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri celebrated 30 years of working together on the Score Against Hunger campaign by unveiling a themed semi-trailer at tailgating areas outside Memorial Stadium on Sept. 20—staff and volunteers collected donations matched up to $30,000 to boost local food security efforts. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A wheelchair powered by a lithium-ion battery exploded while charging Friday night in the 4100 block of Grant Lane and firefighters stopped the fire from spreading to the rest of the home. The Columbia Fire Department warned residents to unplug fully charged devices and to dispose of batteries at the Household Hazardous Waste facility — located at 1313 Lakeview Ave — to prevent similar incidents.  KOMU 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Columbia Housing Authority advanced two affordable housing projects when crews demolished 70 outdated units on Park Avenue and leased 10 Kinney Point units while officials expect the rest to fill by November. New energy efficient apartments will replace the old Park Avenue units—79 in total—and are set to open in 2027.  KRCG
  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture will end all future Household Food Security Reports this Saturday, a move that may make it harder for programs to support low-income Missouri families. Darin Preis from Central Missouri Community Action said the data—vital for planning assistance—will be missed amid recent budget cuts.  KOMU 8
  • MoDOT is inviting applications for winter maintenance positions and is offering flexible shifts to boost its emergency response team this winter—steps intended to increase staffing for better road safety.  Columbia Missourian
