COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Central Missouri will celebrate its 100th birthday with a downtown block party on Madison Street in Jefferson City on September 18 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.—the event features live music, food trucks, interactive booths and a $5 admission for adults as part of the kickoff for its 2025 Campaign supporting 26 partner agencies.  KRCG
  • The final Central Missouri Honor Flight returned to Columbia Monday after 16 years and over 5,600 trips brought veterans from Lambert International Airport to memorial sites in Washington, D.C.—with families gathering at the Courtyard Marriott to welcome them home. Vietnam War veteran Billy Crocker Sr. said the trip and a surprise family greeting eased past hurts and highlighted the deep appreciation felt by many.  KOMU 8

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A lightning strike hit the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity house Monday evening during severe thunderstorms as the Columbia Fire Department responded at 6:45 p.m.—residents were evacuated after a gas smell was reported and nearby buildings suffered damage, though no fire or injuries were found.  KRCG

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Columbia Regional Airport will welcome United Airlines back starting Sept. 25+ they will offer nonstop flights to Chicago O’Hare and Denver while American Airlines will boost capacity at the airport by 26% from September through January+.  KOMU 8
  • Carter's Coffee Bar will open its first location in Columbia soon—bringing a new spot for local coffee lovers.  Columbia Missourian

CULTURE NEWS

  • Columbia native Shelby Ringdahl—former Miss Missouri and theater performer—grew up performing in local schools and built a national career on stage before returning home to mentor young artists. Now a mother and business owner, she directs local productions and runs a consulting company to help future performers succeed.  COMO Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A thunderstorm damaged Southern Boone High School’s south end zone goal post on Monday—no one was injured and the district ordered a replacement to be installed by Friday as the varsity game against Boonville remains scheduled.  KOMU 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Columbia’s city budget shows that leaders plan to invest in both public safety and sustainability by spending more on police and fire services while also funding upgrades such as improved stormwater systems and energy projects — making the community safer and more resilient. The plan uses federal funding to balance immediate needs with long-term savings.  COMO Magazine
  • The Columbia Housing Authority’s Kinney Point project is nearly complete as 10 of 34 low-income housing units are already occupied and about 800 households remain on the waitlist. CHA said the remaining units will be filled by the end of November — the project will feature an on-site resource center to connect residents to social services.  ABC 17
  • Boone County Joint Communications will begin integrating a new 800MHz P25 trunk radio system across public safety agencies including Columbia Police Department and Columbia Fire to improve in-building communication. The project—funded by a 911 Emergency Service Sales Tax—will allow responders to use one multi-band radio while the legacy VHF system is phased out over the next year.  ABC 17
  • Columbia City Council approved the fiscal year 2026 budget on Monday, setting spending for operations and capital projects and allocating $2.7 million from general fund reserves to support public safety, housing, and workforce investment for the period (October 1 to September 30). The approved budget totals nearly $608 million in expenditures based on $559 million in revenue.  KRCG

HEALTH NEWS

  • MU Health Care will offer over 20 vaccination events in September and October that include extended hours, walk-in, and drive-thru clinics for COVID-19 and flu. In Columbia, drive-thru clinics will be held on Oct 18 and Oct 25 at South Providence Medical Park to give car-side shots for people 6 months and older.  KOMU 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • A severe thunderstorm on Sept. 15 damaged a field goal post at Southern Boone High School's outdoor stadium — no one was injured — and the school district will install a new post Friday before the first home varsity football game.  KRCG
