- ➤ Arris' Pizza in Columbia, which served the community for 18 years, is set to close its doors Sept. 21—an auction company has already begun clearing part of its space at 1020 Green Meadows Road, Suite 102 as final preparations are made. KOMU 8
- ➤ Cooper's Landing will begin renovations on Oct. 6 after the Biscuits, Beats and Brews festival to improve its customer facilities. The new building will offer a modern main structure with an expanded general store, full-service bar, multipurpose room with deck seating overlooking the Missouri River — Boone County Resource Management has approved paving Smith Hatchery Road in 2026. - ➤ Local celebrities and artists will reveal new art at the CelebrARTy fundraiser for Access Arts on September 18 at The Blue Note in downtown Columbia. Access Arts reached half its fundraising goal as of Monday and will continue collecting funds with ticket prices set at $50 (additional efforts follow the event). Columbia Daily Tribune

- ➤ Mizzou announced a new Homecoming parade policy that limits participants to celebrations focused solely on Black and Gold — political groups will not be allowed to join the event. Columbia Missourian
- ➤ Heart of Missouri United Way is launching the Read Across Columbia program to help first and second graders improve early reading amid a national drop of five points in scores for 9-year-olds. The program gives 650 bookbags (each with four books and a coupon for one extra free book) to students from schools with low reading scores and high free lunch rates. KRCG
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Kyle Rieman, Boone County Auditor, announced his bid for a second term and will hold his campaign kickoff at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at Hexagon Alley in downtown Columbia—he is running unopposed in the primary on Aug. 4 and the general on Nov. 3 as he pledges to stick to balanced budgets and clean audits. - ➤ The City of Columbia received $14.3 million from Brightspeed as a settlement for unpaid license taxes and fees — ending a years-long court case that was resolved on July 16. This court record shows that the issue was finally settled after years of dispute. ABC 17
- ➤ People not Politicians Missouri is gathering 107,000 signatures by Dec. 11 to pause the new congressional map that Gov. Kehoe is expected to approve—volunteers from across the state are signing up so Missourians can choose their representatives in the November 2026 vote. The nonpartisan group says this petition process will give people a chance to halt House Bill 1 until the signatures are verified. KOMU 8
- ➤ The City of Columbia is preparing its fiscal year 2026 budget that includes $5 million to replace the aging Fire Station 5—built near a former coal mine and now causing subsidence—while council members note that the budget's accounting language is too complex for many citizens.
