COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A collaboration between Job Point and Flourish Initiative has built a new art shed for a youth shelter that gives residents a special space to create and heal. Access Arts will design the interior and may offer art classes this fall, and local donations helped support the project.  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • On September 11th, community members in Columbia gathered to honor the lives lost in the 9/11 attacks and to pay tribute to soldiers who served, with ceremonies held at the Boone County War Memorial Plaza and flag placement at the courthouse lawn representing those who sacrificed in Afghanistan. A navy bell rang to remind everyone of the tragic past while local officials and dignitaries laid wreaths and flowers to honor the fallen.  KRCG

  • Four Missouri grocery store chains were named in USA TODAY 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards for best grocery stores in 2025—experts and readers rated the stores on value, selection and customer service.  Columbia Daily Tribune

  • Visiting artist Drew Cameron turned military uniforms into handmade paper for posters, books and flags—preserving hundreds if not thousands of uniforms into art.  Columbia Missourian

ECONOMY NEWS

  • New rental data shows Columbia apartment listings had a median price of $1,325 in August, up slightly from last year's $1,290 and down from July's $1,350, while one-bedroom rents rose 10% from $995 and two-bedroom rents decreased to $1,074—data gathered from Zumper. The report notes Columbia's median is 4% above the state figure and 31% below the national median.  Columbia Daily Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Missouri changed its homecoming parade application process after a lawsuit by Mizzou Students for Justice in Palestine alleged unfair treatment in the prior parade. The new policy uses a Black and Gold theme and limits parade displays to celebrating school traditions—official spokespersons said the change is part of routine updates—ensuring all groups follow the same rules.  ABC 17
  • Mizzou Students for Justice in Palestine was not allowed to join the Homecoming parade due to safety reasons — marking their second consecutive year of exclusion.  Columbia Missourian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway announced a new age-verification rule to protect kids from explicit material that will take effect on November 30. Websites that do not verify users' ages will face penalties under state law — classified as an unfair practice.  KRCG
  • Columbia City Council will meet with The District on Tuesday to discuss a proposal to raise downtown parking meter prices from 60 cents to $1 an hour. Morgan Boyles, a local business owner, said parking shortages have hurt her business—customers often face long searches for open meters.  KOMU 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mizzou Athletics announced Thursday that the Saturday football game has been moved to a noon start to avoid the extreme heat—temperatures are expected to be slightly cooler at noon than at its planned 3 p.m. start. The change also led to an update in the city bus schedule, with revised times set to be posted Friday morning between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. after final review with bus supervisors.  ABC 17
