- ➤ The Voluntary Action Center in Columbia received a $60,000 grant to build a 547-square-foot kennel at its new Opportunity Campus, which will offer pet-friendly support for unsheltered neighbors. The campus will open in spring and provide 150 emergency beds and other essential services — a measure that could help over 7,000 people annually. KRCG
- ➤ Columbia Parks and Recreation is planning a 17,000-square-foot inclusive playground at Rock Quarry Park that will open in fall. Officials said fundraising has reached half a million dollars with a $150,000 donation and strong community support — the project needs $1.2M to be completed. KOMU 8
- ➤ KRCG 13 and the Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri launched the KRCG 13 Cares: Together Against Hunger campaign today to fight food insecurity in central Missouri by encouraging the public to donate time and funds. - ➤ A Columbia man was arrested after he pulled a gun during a road rage incident on South Tenth Street on September 8; police detained Denver Thai and his passenger after the victim said a red Nissan nearly hit him outside a parking garage—officers later recovered a loaded Glock 9mm from Thai’s car. - ➤ Kimo Spivey—a Columbia club manager involved in the May 2023 Plush Lounge shooting that killed Melvin Hooker III—was sentenced to 10 years with time served for illegal gun possession despite being found not guilty of murder by a jury. ABC 17
