COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Voluntary Action Center got a $60,000 grant from RedRover to build a 547 square feet kennel for pets of people facing homelessness at Opportunity Campus. The new facility will have two rooms for pet housing — bathing and basic medical care — and will serve 75 animals each year, including 56 dogs and 19 cats.  ABC 17

CRIME NEWS

  • Two Columbia residents—Jeffrey M. Stavron, 47, and Nairasha K. Midgyett, 32—were charged with First Degree Trafficking Drugs and Possession of a Controlled Substance after police stopped Stavron for speeding on West Boulevard on September 2nd and a police K-9 detected 15 grams of fentanyl and 2.2 grams of methamphetamine in the car.  KRCG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday, University of Missouri leaders broke ground on two new additions at the MURR facility—one 11,200-square-foot building for lutetium-177 production and one 17,900-square-foot facility for storage and support functions. The industry-funded project is expected to cost about $50 million and boost regional jobs within the next two years.  ABC 17
  • Ridgeway Elementary, Jefferson Middle, Hickman, and Douglass High in Columbia were placed on secure hold just before 11 a.m. on Thursday after a nearby police investigation prompted the action — the measure was lifted five minutes later ensuring students remained safe.  ABC 17

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Missouri Department of Conservation explained that jelly-like blobs called bryozoans—sometimes known as moss animals—are filter-feeding invertebrates that help clean water and show good water quality. They typically form large colonies in late summer and early fall, signaling healthy local waterways.  KRCG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After months of negotiations, the City of Columbia and LiUNA Local 955 reached an agreement for a 3.5 percent pay increase+the new wage rates will be implemented soon.  Columbia Missourian
  • Columbia Public Works will close part of North Eighth Street northbound at the Guitar Building on Sept. 8 for roof repairs that will last until Sept. 26. Drivers must follow detour signs with southbound traffic allowed between East Walnut Street and the alley while sidewalks remain open.  Columbia Daily Tribune

  • Mizzou Tigers will face KU in Columbia for the first time since 2011 as fans join a rivalry tailgate at The Kitchen starting at 12:30 p.m. Buffet tickets cost $16 per adult and $8 for children 10 and under (specialty drinks, yard games and a 30-foot outdoor screen add to the event).  Inside Columbia
