COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Columbia family found a knife (about four inches long) wedged into a playground slide entrance at Bethel Park on Sept. 1, raising safety concerns for visitors. The incident was reported to Columbia Police and City Parks as officials review safety measures amid increased homelessness in the area.  KRCG

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities reported that Hartsburg contractor Ryan A. Gilmore was charged with felony stealing and deceptive business practices after allegedly taking $10,000 from an Ashland man for a roof replacement job in 2022 and failing to complete the work while a $10,000 cash-only bond is set as bail.  ABC 17
  • Audrain sheriff Matt Oller said deputies arrested 41-year-old Scott J. Adams—wanted for a misdemeanor sexual abuse charge—from Marion County at Walsh Boulevard and Lincoln Street in Vandalia after reports placed him near Home Street and Central Avenue Tuesday night into Wednesday, and one state trooper sustained a leg and ankle injury and was taken to University Hospital.  ABC 17

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Workers from union chapter LiUNA 955 will rally at 4 p.m. Wednesday outside University Hospital — citing concerns over low wages and rising parking costs and asking for critical staff pay to be added to their base pay. The union's negotiating team will meet with MU Health Care on Sept. 26 as wage discussions remain pending, and a company spokesman said no proposals have been made yet.  ABC 17
  • Ameren Missouri raised natural gas rates by about 12% on Monday, adding roughly $13 to the average monthly bill. City of Columbia approved a 2% electric rate increase that will take effect on October 1 + low-income energy assistance programs will start accepting applications then.  KOMU 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Columbia city council approved a 2% electric rate increase on Tuesday night that will raise bills during the first billing cycle of October. The boost—adding about $2.8 million annually—will help pay for rising operation and maintenance costs as utilities plan to review customer impacts next spring.  KRCG
  • Missouri law does not set a legal age for kids to be home alone but the Department of Social Services will check on children 8 or younger if a report is made—parents should consider maturity, safety practices like locking up guns and medications, and emergency procedures before leaving them unattended.  Columbia Daily Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mizzou will host the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 2:30 p.m. at Faurot Field as it revives the historic Border War rivalry that has marked over a century of competition.  KRCG
  • A GoFundMe campaign was started to help the family of KOMU sports director Ben Arnet, a local sports figure who died Aug. 28 after a sudden heart event—he was known for his work from high school days to his time at KOMU. The campaign has raised over $34,000 from nearly 425 donations and supports his family during this hard time.  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • Mizzou Athletics announced that for the 2025 football season fans must enter the stadium on the side of their seating—ticket scanners will only allow entry through the designated gates for east, west, and south sections. The department is also reviewing options to add more seating for students who have raised claims.  KOMU 8
