- ➤ Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland launched the Feminine Hygiene Project on Monday, September 1 to improve access to menstrual products for communities in its 67-county service area—local scouts are handing out door hangers with donation instructions. The project is funded by a $6,150 grant from Proctor and Gamble’s fund and will collect donations starting Sept. 27 with deliveries scheduled from Sept. 29 to Oct. 10. KOMU 8
- ➤ On Labor Day, Columbia firefighters stayed on call as emergencies continued through the holiday and answered four calls this morning—including EMS, medical emergencies, smoke alarms and structure fires—to support the community. Firefighter Corey Gilmore, who left a sales career to join the department, said the close team bonds help them manage the demands of working during a holiday. KRCG
- ➤ Central Columbia’s Wilkes Boulevard Methodist Church will close next summer after more than a century of ministry, but its Turning Point day center for homeless people will remain open in the building until it moves to the city’s new Opportunity Campus next year—church leadership announced the change. - ➤ Missouri State Highway Patrol reports 10 drownings in Mid-Missouri this year—eight at the Lake of the Ozarks with four occurring in August and the latest on Saturday when a 19-year-old male did not resurface after entering the water at Public Beach Two—while urging boaters to wear life jackets and avoid alcohol. - ➤ Columbia Public Works is moving ahead with the second phase of building a roundabout at Old Plank Road and Route K as Sam Gaines Construction starts work on the southern half near the Break Time gas station, which will limit access to West Route K and close Maple Meadows Drive.
