Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 31st of August.
Good morning, Columbia.
The Salvation Army of Columbia announced early-bird registration for the Christmas Parade Against Poverty, which accepts only Christmas-themed entries with rates of $40 for nonprofits and $60 for businesses.
The parade will start at 3 p.m. on December 22, beginning west on Broadway — and will include a quiet zone along the final two blocks to help people with sensory issues.
Since the counting period began on August 21, troopers reported three fatalities from traffic and boating accidents—two involving a 17-year-old and a 22-year-old—and advised Columbia drivers and boaters to stay alert as more serious crashes have already been recorded.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol will add extra troopers to monitor traffic on Interstate 70, U.S. 63, U.S. 50 and roads near the Lake of the Ozarks for Labor Day as many drivers will hit the road.
Troopers will enforce speed limits and remind drivers to buckle up (warning against tailgating and unsafe lane changes) to reduce crashes.
The Columbia Fire Department urged citizens to follow grill safety guidelines over Labor Day weekend to keep families safe.
They said grills should be used outdoors—at least three feet from pets and children—and recommended checking propane tanks and gas lines for safe operation.
Columbia City Council will consider raising electricity rates—if approved, the city will receive an extra $2.8 million from utility customers.
Council members will review the proposal details and decide when to vote on the change.
