CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Columbia 16-year-old Kavon Williams was moved to an adult jail after Boone County Judge Joshua Devine approved the transfer on Friday—he was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree robbery in connection with Malik Jones' death and will have hearings every 30 days until he turns 18. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Columbia Public Schools changed its security rules by letting sealed water bottles be brought to high school football games while still requiring clear bags and searches for re-entry — Battle High School will also use weapons detection systems at rivalry games for extra safety. ABC 17
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Nearly 61% of Missouri is very dry as of Aug. 26 and if rain does not come soon, this August may be one of the driest months—drought conditions will lower yields for local farmers. Auxvasse farmer Kenny Brinker said his corn and soybean projections will drop because tariffs and dry weather are hurting sales—foreign buyers are turning to crops from other countries. KOMU 8
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Columbia City Council will consider keeping Go COMO buses fare free for fiscal year 2026 at Tuesday’s meeting since the service has had no fares since COVID-19 changed travel in 2020 — if fares return, new fare boxes will be needed because current equipment is outdated and federal grants are unreliable. Local officials say the change is needed to avoid the costs of reinstating a fare system. KOMU 8

- ➤ Ben Arnet, the 43-year-old KOMU 8 sports director and Columbia native, passed away on August 28 — he leaves behind his wife Nicole and daughter Lyla and is remembered for his work in sports journalism. KRCG
