ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Prairie Home woman suffered moderate injuries when a Chevrolet Malibu driven by a 22-year-old man rear-ended the buggy she rode on Monday night on Highway 87 north of Apple Drive—she was taken to University Hospital while the buggy driver was uninjured.  ABC 17

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Columbia's retail scene is gaining new life with openings like Magnolia’s Whisky & Wine Bar, Scratch Italian Fare, Burlington, Five Below and HomeGoods while Trader Joe’s is set to open later this year and Qdoba recently took over a Dunkin’ Donuts spot on Elm Street—this growth happens despite a retail vacancy rate of 5.68%.  KOMU 8

CRIME NEWS

  • A panel of judges ordered the Boone County circuit court to fix the written judgment in the 2022 shooting case—where Terrance Johnson was found guilty in March and sentenced in April to 14 years—and denied his appeal for self-defense instructions because he did not offer enough evidence.  ABC 17
  • Police responded to a gunshot near Hickman High School just before noon Tuesday and linked the sound to a person shooting at an aggressive dog—an incident that led to a brief school security protocol, which has now been lifted.  KOMU 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Missouri enrollment rose to over 31,000 students this fall when classes began Monday, with Tuesday's data showing more than 6,000 first-time students, 1,200 transfers, and over 1,400 new graduate and professional students — university leaders said high retention and a 95% placement rate show the school's focus on student success.  KOMU 8
  • Today, Columbia College installed more 360-view cameras, brighter LED lighting on parking lots, updated keyswipe systems, and an expanded team of 10 campus safety officers—improving campus security during daily activities. The $250,000 upgrade is part of a larger $2.2 million summer plan to modernize safety measures and work with local law enforcement.  KOMU 8
  • Columbia Public Schools met Tuesday to review a facility condition assessment that grouped building needs into four categories — immediate, critical, noncritical and deferred maintenance; Chief Operating Officer Lazell Ofield noted that 17 school buildings need work for fire and life safety, and an updated audit from 2018 will be released in the next couple of months.  ABC 17
  • Stephens College announced that it will see undergraduate enrollment grow over 8% this fall and total enrollment rise by 5% as new president Shannon B. Lundeen begins her term—she is also leading academic improvements with an expanded Nursing Center and an upgraded Animal Behavior Program.  ABC 17
