CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On August 4, Dana G. Jones, 60, called 911 to report a fake shooting when no incident happened—police later found he broke a restraining order and he now faces charges for first degree harassment, second degree terrorist threat, and making a false report. KRCG
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Columbia Art League began in 1959 and has grown into a key part of our visual arts scene by offering art classes and hosting the Art in the Park festival that draws thousands. Executive Director Kelsey Hammond said the nonprofit helped launch community radio and yoga and continues to support local artists. COMO Magazine
- ➤ COMO Magazine launched The Scene e-newsletter that spotlights Columbia’s art and culture and is directed by Trent Rash, who has led the Missouri Symphony since 2019 and taught at Stephens College—adding deep local experience. He shared his top picks for the rest of August including the Wonder Exhibit at Columbia Art League from July 29—Sept 4 and a screening of Dirty Dancing at Ragtag Cinema on August 25. COMO Magazine
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Columbia Public Schools lowered its property tax rate to $5.542 per $100 assessed valuation—the lowest since the 2021-22 school year—but higher home values in Boone County mean homeowners will see tax bill increases. The school board also sent a proposed policy limiting superintendent contract buyouts to one year's salary to the Missouri School Boards Association for review. Columbia Daily Tribune
- ➤ Columbia Public Schools is working to balance AI's benefits for learning with strict rules to stop cheating. The board approved an AI use plan on Jan. 27 that sets clear rules and penalties for academic dishonesty—students must credit any AI help or face reduced grades or removal from activities. ABC 17
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Contractors for the City of Columbia will work on pavement maintenance on more than 30 streets from August 27 to September 12 using a fast-drying Onyx surface treatment instead of chip seal. Crews will work daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. except Sundays and during Labor Day weekend. ABC 17
