COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Missourian Publishing Association bought the Boone County Journal, a weekly newspaper serving Ashland and Hartsburg—its regular features and expanded local news coverage will continue with the first issue printing Aug. 27.  KOMU 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The District is accepting applications for grants for minority-owned businesses—programs that will support eligible local entrepreneurs in the downtown area.  Columbia Missourian

CRIME NEWS

  • A Kansas City man, Beau Barrera, was charged in Boone County with first-degree attempted assault and aggravated fleeing after he led a high-speed chase on I-70 on July 19 that saw him drive more than 140 mph near College Avenue — he failed a field sobriety test and was arrested in Montgomery County on July 20.  ABC 17
  • Boone County prosecutors are seeking to upgrade the charge against Columbia man Steven Shareil Jones, accused of fatally shooting a 42-year-old man outside Lakeview Mall on December 12, 2024—his trial is set for Sept 3.  KOMU 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MU held a major move-in on Wednesday and is welcoming more students today while Stephens College moved in on Wednesday; heavy traffic is expected near campuses—parking maps and shuttle route changes are in effect as students and families get ready for classes beginning Monday, Aug. 25.  KOMU 8
  • At MU, students moved in on Wednesday and are continuing to arrive today as traffic increases near campus with temporary parking available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.—Columbia College held its check-in yesterday while Stephens College will begin move-in on Friday with orientations on Saturday and Sunday.  KOMU 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Mike Kehoe announced Tuesday that former House Speaker Catherine Hanaway is Missouri's new attorney general—she is the first woman to hold the position and will take office Sept. 8 to serve the rest of Andrew Bailey’s term ending in 2028. Hanaway said she will focus on criminal prosecutions by working with local law enforcement to fight crime.  KOMU 8
