COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Local businesses held two back to school events Sunday — one at Armory Sports and Recreation Center and another at Cosmo Park, where students received haircuts, backpacks, school supplies, and clothes to boost their confidence. The Jump-Start Day for 6th and 9th graders is taking place today as classes begin Tuesday. ABC 17
- ➤ Today, the National Federation of the Blind of Missouri announced that donations and volunteer support have dropped, which could threaten programs for people with low vision. Gary Wunder, the Columbia chapter president, said the nonprofit is urging community help to avoid future service cuts amid economic uncertainty. KOMU 8
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The Columbia Police Department said it is asking for community help to identify two individuals in connection with vandalism that occurred August 16th—where flyers were glued to walls and light poles were damaged on the University of Missouri campus and downtown. KRCG
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Columbia City Council will swear in new member Vera Elwood—who won the special election on Aug. 5—and vote on a proposed water rate increase while also discussing a planned 2% electric rate increase to be decided in September. The council will set the 2025 property tax rate slightly lower than last year, generating about $11 million for the 2026 budget. Columbia Daily Tribune
