COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Central Missouri Humane Society is seeking foster homes for more than a dozen neglected adult dogs rescued by Columbia Animal Control from a large impoundment case — the dogs arrived emaciated and under-socialized and need gentle care before they are adopted. CMHS will provide food, supplies, and veterinary care at no cost to the families caring for these survivors. KOMU 8
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Columbia man, Tre’shon T. Smith, faced multiple charges after an hours-long armed stand-off at Stephens Lake Park on Monday—police reported that he, carrying a knife, damaged a patrol vehicle and park tables and threatened officers and hospital staff before being arrested using less-lethal devices, and his bond was set at $10,000. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ In July, inflation in the Midwest rose 2.6% as rent increased 5% and medical costs rose 3.6%, even though food and energy prices fell—according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Tuesday. ABC 17
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Columbia Educational Robotics Foundation held a ribbon cutting on Tuesday for its new Youth Robotics Center to give local youth robotics teams a space to build and test robots. Officials said the center, which already hosts teams from local high schools, is set to boost hands-on STEM learning. KOMU 8
- ➤ Dr. Jeff Klein became Columbia Public Schools superintendent on July 1 and has changed key services by replacing the old bus service with DS Bus Lines under a contract through July 2028. He said that Jump Start Day on Monday, August 18—introducing incoming sixth and ninth graders to their new schools—along with six new principals and planned renovations at the Columbia Area Career Center will support the district's success this year. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Boone County Resource Management announced that a chip seal treatment project will begin Thursday with work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, causing 10 to 15 minute closures and no parking during work hours (cars left parked will be towed). The work will finish around Aug. 30, weather permitting. KOMU 8

- ➤ Heart, Body, & Soul will host Energy Healing for Mental Health classes on Aug. 30-31 at 1004 W Worley St.—participants will learn to balance energy, release negative vibes, and heal past trauma using Reiki methods.
