COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbia Farmers Market hosted contests and celebrations for National Farmers Market Week—competitors chewed through a watermelon eating contest while kids built cars out of zucchinis in a hands-on workshop. The event brought fun and unique challenges to the community.  Columbia Missourian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Columbia Board of Education will vote on changes to the student transfer policy today at 5:30 p.m. at the Aslin Administration Building as part of its summer session for the upcoming school year. The new policy will let approved transfers continue without yearly reapplication while evaluating requests from employees outside the district based on students’ educational needs.  ABC 17
  • Today, the Columbia Public Schools board will review last year’s legislative priorities and plan advocacy positions while receiving reports on school improvement and community listening sessions. The board will also vote on an agreement with Specialized Education of Missouri Inc. and proposals for a new board administrator, intradistrict transfers and construction projects — a busy agenda for this meeting — as it prepares for the new school year.  Columbia Daily Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A hydrologist offered flood safety tips for summer camp organizers, urging them to plan ahead, rely on trusted resources, and invest in a weather radio. At Coopers Landing—an area along the Missouri River—owner Richard King, who survived a severe flood in 2019, said he will renovate the camp starting in October to make it flood proof by spring 2026.  KOMU 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Columbia city leaders are hosting budget town hall meetings today at City Hall (rooms 1A and 1B: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.) to explain the 2026 fiscal year budget that shows a $40 million gap between expenses and revenue. Council members will vote on the plan in September and residents may add their comments at the Aug.18 council meeting at 7 p.m.  ABC 17
