COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbia Housing and Neighborhood Services approved 12 mini-grant projects using Bloomberg Philanthropies' Love Your Block grant to revitalize local neighborhoods. The projects, which include new community garden signs and exterior improvements, must be completed by the end of August.  KOMU 8

CRIME NEWS

  • A Bland man, David M. Lueke Jr., was arrested Friday on first-degree murder charges in connection with a homicide in Gasconade County—where officials say the death initially reported as a suicide was later investigated as a homicide—and he is held at Franklin County Adult Detention Facility on a $500,000 cash only bond.  ABC 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Columbia police said retired K-9 Gorrit (an 11-year-old Dutch shepherd) died after serving from 2015 until his retirement in January; he spent his retirement with Sgt. Jamie Dowler and his family.  KOMU 8
  • The Missouri State Highway Patrol urged Columbia drivers to slow down as more school buses, student drivers, and cyclists will join the roads when school begins this August—843 crashes occurred last year—and parents are urged to stay alert at bus stops.  ABC 17

HEALTH NEWS

  • Columbia Health Department held its first back-to-school vaccine clinic for K-12 students on Saturday at the Public Health and Human Services Department on W. Worley St. The second clinic is set for August 16 by appointment after free in-school shots ended due to an $804,000 funding cut—families are advised to check with their providers for vaccinations.  KOMU 8

  • At Saturday’s fall camp scrimmage, Mizzou coach Eli Drinkwitz answered live questions from reporters to share insight into the team’s progress—detailing his responses as the camp continues.  ABC 17
