- ➤ Construction at the Opportunity Campus on Business Loop 70 is advancing for a facility that will open in 2026 with a year-round homeless shelter and a resource center operated by the Voluntary Action Center. Ed Stansberry said the project is about 82% funded at $18.6 million—50 employees will be hired and the shelter will host 125 overnight guests while serving 150 meals daily. KOMU 8
- ➤ Local organizations including MU Extension’s Jefferson Farm and Garden Center and the Center for Urban Agriculture Opportunity Gardens program are working to help residents fight food insecurity through community gardens in Columbia. MU Extension will supply 30,000 bedding plants to over 900 gardens this year—supporting low-income residents in accessing fresh produce and reducing grocery costs. KRCG
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Collin Knight pleaded guilty to killing his 52-year-old father in 2022 and was sentenced Monday to life in prison for the crime — he also received a 15-year sentence for probation violations — authorities said. KOMU 8
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Missouri Botanical Garden reported that its corpse flower, Octavia, bloomed on August 2 — a rare event after nearly a decade — and the plant grew slightly in size while emitting a strong, foul odor that drew plant enthusiasts during its limited display hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be returned to its greenhouse later this week until its next bloom. - ➤ Columbia City Council discussed changing the tiered water rate system on Monday night—households using more water in summer may face higher bills, while consistent users could pay less; a vote on the proposal is set for August 18 amid concerns over incomplete water infrastructure projects. - ➤ The City of Columbia launched the new Find CoMo Parks app that helps residents explore its 75 parks spanning over 3,800 acres by enabling searches for activities, amenities and parking.
