- ➤ The U.S. cattle herd hit its lowest level in 73 years last year, so farmers have bred heavier cows to keep beef production steady. Missouri experts say meatpackers are raising weight limits—pushing producers to track feed efficiency as they adjust to the new system. Columbia Missourian
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Missouri residents will be able to buy select back-to-school items without paying local and state sales tax—starting at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1 until midnight Sunday, Aug. 3—and eligible items include clothing, school supplies, computers, and calculators. This tax-free weekend lets families save on essential preparations for the school year. Columbia Daily Tribune
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Boone County Fire Protection District will switch to SoyFoam TF 1122, a plant-based firefighting foam made from soybeans that does not contain PFAS and is safer for firefighters + the environment. The district currently has one fire truck equipped with the foam and will fully transition when its old supply runs out. KOMU 8
- ➤ Boone County voters cast ballots on Wednesday for a Special Election set for August 5. Clerk Brianna Lennon said an average of 100 voters per day turned in ballots—voters will decide on a countywide Proposition 1, a Second Ward council seat, and a school tax levy increase. KRCG
