ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A Columbia man died in Boone County when a 20-year-old Ram driver crossed the centerline and hit a parked 2020 Toyota Camry at 5 a.m. on Sunday—MSHP said the victim, a 23-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. KRCG
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Columbia man, Jesus Ornelas-Rios (20), was charged with driving while intoxicated, causing a pedestrian's death and leaving the scene early Sunday morning on Route AB near Highway 63 after witnesses said he hit the victim in a red 2021 Ram. ABC 17
- ➤ A Columbia man named Seth Brinegar, who posted a $600,000 bond last year after being accused of fatally shooting Corey Bilger at a gas station on Feb. 1, now faces added charges—second-degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon and a misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child—with court hearings scheduled for Aug. 11 at 9 a.m. and Nov. 14 at 1:30 p.m. ABC 17
- ➤ Columbia police detained Glenn O'Dell Bennett, Jr., 36 after he allegedly choked a man during a fight that began Saturday at 9:56 p.m.—he now faces charges of Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Armed Criminal Action and is held in Boone County Jail without bond. KRCG
- ➤ Columbia police responded around 9:56 p.m. Saturday to a fight on the 300 block of Park Avenue that ended with a man being stabbed in the head in an apparent act of self-defense—court documents show that 36-year-old Glenn Bennett is charged with unlawful weapon use and armed criminal action and had his initial hearing at 1 p.m. Monday while he remained held without bond. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City of Columbia will hold town halls on Aug. 11 for the fiscal year 2026 budget—one session runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and a second from 6 to 8 p.m. Both meetings will be held at City Hall in conference rooms 1A/1B and are open to residents who register online. ABC 17
- ➤ The City of Columbia announced that exit gates in all six parking garages will remain open overnight through August 4 during downtown pavement maintenance. Parking is free on weekdays from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. and all day on weekends—residents are advised to avoid restricted spaces and watch for 'No Parking' signs. KRCG
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ MU Health Care emergency room doctors warned residents that the heat index reached 105 degrees on Monday and urged everyone to stay indoors, drink water and wear sunscreen to avoid heat stroke. Preschool teachers shortened outdoor playtime and advised using air-conditioned cooling centers—especially for vulnerable neighbors and pets needing shade. KRCG
