COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The American Red Cross broke ground yesterday on a new $10 million regional headquarters on Stellar Drive in Columbia to replace its 50-year-old facility and serve as a hub for blood collection and disaster relief. More than 20 firms including Coil Construction are beginning excavation work next week — the project is expected to be completed by next summer. KOMU 8
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A 31-year-old man from Huntsville piloted an Air Tractor 402B when it struck electrical cables and crashed into a cornfield in Boone County at 1:15 p.m. on July 22, and he is in critical condition after being flown by MU Air to University Hospital. KRCG
- ➤ A crop duster pilot from Huntsville was in serious condition after his plane hit electrical cables and crashed into a rural cornfield on Tuesday afternoon in Boone County—emergency crews life-flighted him to University Hospital in Columbia and restored power outages in northern Boone County by 6:00 p.m. Columbia Daily Tribune
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Tyler Casteel, 21, was arrested on Wednesday in Boone County for allegedly punching a man in the face and trying to stab him Tuesday after he got angry when his phone failed—he is held without bond at Boone County Jail. ABC 17
- ➤ Two Columbia teens were taken into custody after a Tuesday night shooting left a man with a gunshot wound to his back and he was taken to University Hospital; 19-year-old Jerrion Smith was charged with second degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and armed criminal action while 18-year-old Alan D. Bullock, Jr. faced a charge of tampering with physical evidence (with bonds set at $6,000 and $1,500 respectively). KRCG
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Motorists in southern Columbia will face lane restrictions and road closures starting July 28 when Sam Gaines Construction begins work on a roundabout to improve safety at West Route K and West Old Plank Road. The project costs about $1.9 million and is funded by MoDOT + city funds, with work expected to finish by early winter, weather permitting. Columbia Daily Tribune
