ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Columbia emergency personnel responded Sunday at 1 p.m. near Cooper’s Landing after strong Missouri River currents separated a boater from his vessel, forcing him to cling to driftwood while kayaker Jesse Jones, who had been fishing and lost his paddle, quickly returned to shore—both were rescued without injury.  KRCG
  • On Sunday night, an underground explosion caused smoke in the sewers and led to the closure of Worley Street from Stadium—West Blvd, prompting drivers to take alternate routes as first responders cleared the area by about 9:35 p.m.  ABC 17
  • An underground explosion occurred Sunday evening in Columbia—closing Worley Street between Stadium Boulevard and West Boulevard, according to Boone County Joint Communications.  KOMU 8

CRIME NEWS

  • Boone County deputies investigated a homicide after they found that a 43-year-old Columbia woman was fatally shot in her vehicle on Saturday night near a home at the 2400 block on North Lake of the Woods Road—she was discovered when a sergeant responded to a vehicle crash call at 11:35 p.m.  KRCG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Columbia City Council holds a public hearing on planned capital improvement projects set to begin in 2026—funded by voter-approved taxes and other revenue streams. The council will not finalize the project list until after later budget hearings.  Columbia Daily Tribune
  • Boone County voters will decide in August whether to extend a senior real estate tax freeze so that seniors aged 62 and older pay no more on public bond debt than this year. Local agencies dispute whether the freeze applies to the tax rate or the dollar amount, and legal experts predict the measure may ultimately go to court—adding uncertainty to future public funding.  KOMU 8
  • Missouri Task Force One finished its search and recovery mission in Kerr County, Texas and will return to Boone County at noon on Wednesday—four members will stay behind to support the Incident Support Team.  KOMU 8
