COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbia Salvation Army officials expanded their Baby Pantry hours yesterday at the Ash Street headquarters by switching from monthly to weekly service—open now from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Major Nancy Powers said the change will support families in need and calls for more volunteers and donations to meet the growing demand.  KRCG
  • Wynnsome, a downtown tea and cake shop, announced summer 'Camp Wynn' events starting tonight with a screening of The Parent Trap at 6:30 p.m. and will host candle making on July 19, tea and chocolate tasting on July 25, ceramic painting on July 26, cake decorating on July 30, flower arranging on August 7, live music on August 9, and high tea on August 10 (updates are on Instagram).  Inside Columbia
  • Today the Boone County Fair is in full swing as temperatures reach this week's high, and fair officials said air-conditioned zones and free water will be provided to keep visitors and animals safe. Boone Health EMS advises everyone to stay hydrated — a key safety measure — and use these cooling areas to enjoy the fair safely.  KOMU 8

CRIME NEWS

  • A Columbia man died after suffering injuries from an arson on Paris Road, and police said 31-year-old Donovan Baylis, who was hospitalized for nearly a month, died Monday while a suspect remains at large.  Columbia Missourian
  • John Austin Harvey—a 26-year-old man from St. Joseph—has been charged with First Degree Statutory Rape and Statutory Sodomy after police recovered videos on a 12-year-old girl's phone when she was found on July 11 following her disappearance on July 9 in Columbia.  KRCG
  • On July 15, Columbia police arrested 18-year-old Jamaal Jordan after he pointed a gun at a resident's door off Grindstone Parkway and recovered two handguns from his car, and he now faces charges for Armed Criminal Action, Defacing Firearm and Unlawful Use of Weapon.  KRCG

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Red Cross is offering a Fandango Movie ticket reward for blood and platelet donations for the remaining days of July to help keep the blood supply steady, with donation opportunities available at the Columbia Blood Donation Center (donors of all blood types are encouraged to give).  KOMU 8

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The West Broadway Historic District shows a row of century-old homes that tell Columbia’s story of growth and preservation — local advocates and long-time residents have worked to protect its unique architecture and community feel. The city's Historic Preservation Plan is under state review and will be adopted later this summer to guide future development.  COMO Magazine
  • Mayor Barbara Buffaloe outlined Columbia’s efforts to expand housing options—updating zoning rules, streamlining permits, launching a Housing Trust, and partnering with Boone County to boost infrastructure. She warned that proposed federal cuts to key programs and possible tariffs on building materials could drive up costs for local builders and residents.  COMO Magazine

  • The 2025 Show-Me State Games will open with a free ceremony at 7 p.m. Friday, July 25 at Mizzou Arena—featuring an athlete parade and vendor booths—and games will run from Friday at 8 a.m. until noon through Sunday while registration and volunteer sign-ups remain available online.  KOMU 8
